Mentor, Painesville Rotary clubs issue Drama Awards

- Steve Couch Young Thespians

For decades, the annual Rotary Drama Awards program has awarded Lake County young thespians for their high school performances throughout the year.

According to the clubs, the program is the brainchild of Painesville Rotarian Robert Tischer, who believed that students who participate in school theater productions should receive recognition similar to that bestowed upon students who participated in athletics. This year’s program was recently hosted at Harvey High School. in Painesville.

In addition to performance awards, the Rotary Clubs also awarded Robert E. Tischer Scholarships to Brennan Flat of Perry High School, Ethan McCoy of Riverside High School, Morgan Braemer of Fairport Harding High School, and Peyton Leinweber of Riverside.

Madison High School

Although the Rotary Drama Awards would suggest that the entire 2021-22 Lake County high school theater season is in the books, there is still one school yet to perform.

Three years after they cut “Footloose” with their last annual spring musical production at the historic Rabbit Run Theatre in 2019 and two productions in their high school gym, the thespians at Madison Theatre are going back to “the Barn” for this year’s spring musical production of “Mamma Mia!”

Madison Theater will present “Mamma Mia!” at 7:30 p.m. May 13 and 14 and at 2 p.m. May 14. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Toddlers 2 and under are free. Tickets are only available via online advanced sale.

“Mamma Mia!” is directed by yours truly with music direction by Madison Schools vocal music teacher Jennifer Calhoun, choreography by Jailyn Harris, assistant choreography by Casey Couch, and tech direction by Erik Katko and Ray Beach. “Mamma Mia!” features book by Catherine Johnson and music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus and some songs with Stig Anderson.

“Mamma Mia!” gets its title from the popular ABBA song. ABBA is a Swedish super-group that was popular in the 1970s, but has recently reunited for a new album and virtual tour, so all things ABBA are hot again.

This musical is a “jukebox”style musical that stitches an original story around all of ABBA’s most popular songs from their hit-making heyday, including “Gimme Gimme Gimme,” “Take a Chance On Me,” and their signature song and only U.S. No. 1 hit “Dancing Queen.”

“Mamma Mia!” is a fun, upbeat dance-heavy musical that is sure to get the audience up on their feet and even singing along.

This is my fifth Madison High School production for International Thespian Society Troupe No. 2425. If you have never been to the Ohio Historic Landmark that is the Rabbit Run barn theater, the glorious weather week we are currently enjoying gives you an excellent opportunity.

Follow Madison Theatre on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter @BlueStreakDrama, and come see us this weekend! If you do, be sure to say hello!
