Landry agrees to deal with Saints

General manager Andrew Berry strongly hinted Jarvis Landry would not be re-signed by the Browns during his news conference previewing the 2022 NFL Draft, and now Landry has confirmed he’ll have a new address next season.

Landry, released by the Browns on March 14 in a salary cap move, has agreed to a one-year contract to play for the New Orleans Saints, according to various reports May 13. Landry announced the news on his Instagram account with the message: “HOME !!! WHO DAT NATION SEE YOU SOON.” He also tweeted simply: “WHO DAT”

Landry was born and raised in Metairie, La., just six miles from downtown New Orleans.

He played his college football at LSU and was a first-round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2014. He played four seasons with the Dolphins.

Former Browns general manager John Dorsey acquired Landry on March 9, 2018, in a trade that sent a 2018 fourth-round pick and a 2019 seventh-round pick to Miami. Dorsey then signed Landry for five years and $75.5 million. The 2022 portion of the contract, which was not guaranteed, was for $14 million.

Landry led the NFL with

112 catches his final year with the Dolphins in 2017. He preceded Baker Mayfield to Cleveland by about six weeks. Dorsey used the first pick of the 2018 draft on Mayfield.

The Browns were 1-15 and 0-16 the two years before Landry and Mayfield arrived in Cleveland. Together, they helped turn around a losing culture. The Browns went 7-8-1 in 2018, 6-10 in 2019 and 11-5 in 2020. The Browns then went 1-1 in the playoffs after

the 2020 regular season.

Things began to disintegrate last year when the Browns finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs. Landry was limited to 12 games because he missed four with a knee injury and one because of COVID. He caught a career-low 52 passes for 570 yards and two touchdowns.

Odell Beckham Jr., Landry’s closest friend, was released by the Browns in early November. In March, the Browns made the decision

to move on from Mayfield by trading six draft picks, including three firstround picks, to the Houston Texans for quarterback Deshaun Watson.

“I think everybody knows our affinity for Jarvis the person and Jarvis the competitor,” Berry said on April 22. “I think he’ll have a successful season wherever he ends up next year.”

Landry totaled 288 catches for 3,560 yards and 15 touchdowns in his four years with the Browns.
