Nature talk explores fireflies
Blackbrook Audubon will be holding a meeting at 7 p.m. May 16 in which Carly Martin, a Cleveland Metroparks naturalist, will describe the ecology of fireflies and help the audience rekindle their passion for firefly watching.
At Penitentiary Glen Reservation, 8668 Kirtland-Chardon Road in Kirtland, attendees will learn what they can do to help boost these bioluminescent beetles’ numbers and restore the night magic, according to a news release. Under the family Lampyridae, the United States has over 125 species of fireflies, with about two dozen species in Ohio.
Martin says firefly activity peaks in June. She’s been a naturalist at Cleveland Metroparks since 1998 and is based at CanalWay Center in Ohio and Erie Canal Reservation.
Program attendees are asked to bring their own mugs for coffee and tea.
Blackbrook Audubon covers Ashtabula, Geauga and Lake counties as the local chapter of National Audubon Society. For more information, email blackbrookaud@aol.com.
