The National Park Service staff of James A. Garfield National Historic Site recently announced a free outdoor concert by the University Heights Symphonic Band will take place 7 p.m. June 8.

The concert will take place on the grounds behind President and Mrs. Garfield’s home at 8095 Mentor Ave. in Mentor,.

The band began in 1970 as a summer-season performing band. This will be its fifth year performing at James A. Garfield National Historic Site according to a news release.

“We have a vast and varied repertoire,” band Secretary Dorothy Berman stated in the release. “We play selections for everyone’s taste, from show tunes to light classics, concert band music to marches.

“Members of our band work in many different fields; many are retirees or students” she added. “The common denominator is a love of music, for which we gather on Thursday nights for rehearsals or concerts.”

“We’re excited to welcome back the UHSB,” Allison Powell, acting site manager of the Garfield National Historic Site stated in the release. “The beautiful lawn and large shade trees behind the Garfield home make this a perfect place to enjoy an outdoor concert.

“We know that a number of bands played on the grounds in 1880 when James Garfield ran his presidential campaign from this property, so we’re thrilled to offer free live music to the public.”

Those attending are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on during the concert. Organizers also recommend they bring anything else needed for personal comfort, including drinking water and insect repellent.

Picnic baskets are welcomed; but alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Additional concerts by other area bands will take place at the Garfield Site July 30, Aug. 5, and Aug. 19. These three concerts will all be at 2 p.m.
