Teams forming for trivia tournament
Teams for this year’s Mind Challenge for the New Majority trivia competition have begun forming.
The trivia tournament for residents for ages 50 and older will commence on April 15. According to founders Art Greenberg and Phil Levine, this year’s tournament will have 66 cities participating with more to come.
“Fresh off a most successful 2023 season, we should approach 700 participants who will compete for cash prizes for their senior municipal centers,” they said.
Now in its sixth year, the competition has allowed seniors on competing teams to use their minds and enhance their socialization.
“Our geographic footprint has taken the Mind Challenge into expanding our city’s list in Summit and Stark counties while adding cities and teams in Medina and Cuyahoga counties,” the founders said. “We have been met with such enthusiasm by not only players and teams who have previously participated but also new players and teams anxious to unseat three-time winner Broadview Heights as the 2024 Mind Challenge Champion.”
This year’s Mind Challenge is currently scheduled to conclude on May 22 in order to assure participants and sponsors of a robust tournament without interfering with Memorial Day activities at senior centers. The founders are encouraging a couple more teams, consisting of four to six players, representing Willoughby Hills. Interested teams can email WHCommunications@WilloughbyHills-OH.gov.
Having grown from 16 cities in its inaugural year, the competition had more than 60 cities with excess of
90 teams participate in last year’s tournament. Teams
that represented new cities included Eastlake, Warren,
Austintown, Girard, Barberton and Akron.
For the third year in a row, the team from Broadview Heights won last year’s tournament. Broadview defeated a veteran Willoughby Hills squad by a final score of 118-108. Twotime champion Mentor finished third, and Beachwood broke through as one of the new teams to make the final six. It finished in fourth place.
Broadview earned $2,500 for its city. Willoughby Hills won $1,500 for its efforts, Mentor received $1,000 and Beachwood got $500.
“This was a great tournament,” Levine said. “We had new teams along with returning squads reach the semifinals and once again, Broadview Heights emerged victorious.”
