Dragas named D-II first-team All-Ohio again

- By Ben Hercik

For the second season in a row, Madison senior JP Dragas earned D-II first-team All-Ohio. The senior was announced as one of the players on the first team as the Ohio Prep Sports Writers Association’s final announcements of All-Ohio honors.

Dragas, the 2023-24 Clark Kellogg Award winner as News-Herald player of the year, capped a historic campaign this season.

He was a four-year starter for the Blue Streaks and his impact was felt immediately as he was the leading scorer for Madison in a shortened season due to COVID-19. Dragas kept that streak going over the next three seasons.

He set the school’s all-time scoring record against Perry on Feb. 7, 2023, and also set the mark for most points in a game with a pair of 52-point performances. Against Berkshire on Feb. 13 this season, Dragas etched his name onto the short list of players who have reached 2,000 career points with a free throw in the fourth quarter.

Dragas, a West Liberty signee, finished the season averaging 28.6 points per game to go along with 4.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 4.3 steals. He also guided Madison to a share of the CVC-Lake title this season to put a cap on a record book career.

In D-I, North’s Sean Register earned second-team honors after also having a legendary career for the Rangers.

season and kept the ball rolling from there. On the year he averaged a double-double with 29 points and 11.1 rebounds while also averaging 3.8 assists and two blocks, the former of which also led the team.

He helped the Rangers to their first WRC title since 2014 as well.

Mentor also has a pair of seniors who earned AllOhio honors as Ian Ioppolo and Matt Biddell were on second and third team, respectively.

Ioppolo, a Findlay signee, led the Cardinals with 26.8 points and nine rebounds while breaking multiple scoring records, including highest single-season scoring average in Mentor history. He finished with 1,614 points, which has him third alltime behind Cole Krizancic and Justin Fritts.

Biddell, a Walsh signee, was right behind Ioppolo in scoring with 23.5 points per game and 7.2 rebounds. He led the team in assists with 5.6 and steals with 2.3. Numerous other area athletes earned honors in the special and honorable mentions.
