Dr. Uma Chowdhry, age
76, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully on January 7, 2024, surrounded by family and friends after a long illness following a stroke.
Uma was born in Bombay, India to Nirmala and Rasiklal Dalal and lived in the United States with her husband, Vinay Chowdhry for over five decades.
Uma had a distinguished academic record at Caltech and received a Ph.D. in Materials Science from MIT before joining Central R&D at DuPont as a research scientist in 1977. Working across several DuPont businesses, Uma held various senior business and R&D management positions rising to Senior Vice President and Chief Technology officer for five years before retiring in 2010. During her career Uma served on corporate boards as well as advisory boards for academic and professional institutions.
Throughout her academic and professional career, Uma received a multitude of honors and awards including being elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1996. Uma was a strong leader with steadfast beliefs and was a source of inspiration and mentorship for younger colleagues and family members.
Uma enjoyed travel, listening to classical music and collecting ceramic art with her husband, Vinay.
Uma is survived by her husband, Vinay; sister, Nita; nephews, nieces and close friends of long standing who will sorely miss her warm smile and caring personality.
