Poll: Help us find Delaware Student of the Week

- From Staff Reports

We know so many standout students are deserving of recognition, filling the halls of Delaware schools of all shapes and sizes.

Like our athlete-of-the-week feature that honors athletic achievement via reader voting, Delaware Online/The News Journal is honoring a “Delaware Student of the Week” across high schools to close out every week. The award looks to highlight academic excellence, extra-curricular activities, volunteerism, perseverance and more attributes that make up the lives of so many young scholars.

School principals and other educators send in nominations — while you, dear reader, keep handling the rest.

Here are the next four nominations for the next Delaware Student of the Week:

Kaley Gonzalez, The John Dickinson School: This freshman was nominated as a “true asset” to her school. Excellent academics meets service as co-captain on the soccer team. Her nominator praised superior communication skills, an ultimate respect for others and wide respect from her peers.

Reilly Miller, Newark High: Miller volunteers in the community, her nominator wrote in a list; she tutors other students in English and Spanish; she plays soccer; and the sophomore serves as president of the Spanish National Honor Society. On top of this, she was also recently accepted to study abroad this summer in Rome, in the CiEE Art & History program.

Jeremiah Chancey, William Penn High: This freshman is already making an impression. Chancey is said to bring a positive attitude toward peers and academics. “He demonstrates compassion, leadership, flexibility, initiative and dedication, on a daily basis,” his nominator said. There has not been a single day this year that Jeremiah has not come to class and given it his all. He is involved in extra curricular activities and has maintained an A average in English class all year.

Nola O’Connell, Las Americas ASPIRA Academy: This junior was nominated for work in the classroom. Studying in Delaware’s first duallanguage charter school, O’Connell was highlighted for leadership in discussions and strength in academic writing.
