WILMINGTON - In loving memory of Robert I. Marchlewic­z aka Senator Robert I. Marshall, 77, of Wilmington, Delaware, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a remarkable individual who dedicated his life to public service and community welfare.

Senator Marshall passed away peacefully at Christiana Hospital on Saturday, March 30th, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generation­s to come. Sen. Marshall was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, and the only child of the late Helen and Ignatius Marchlewic­z, who early on instilled in him the value of work and education.

Sen. Marshall attended St. Hedwig Parochial School and Salesianum High School. He continued his studies at Thomas Edison State College in New Jersey where in 1985, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.

Sen. Marshall served our nation in the Army National Guard and continued his career at the Delaware Skills Center where he spent 18 years as the Executive Director. He demonstrat­ed unwavering commitment, sacrifice, and bravery in his roles, leaving an indelible mark on both the community and the defense of our nation.

Sen. Marshall exemplifie­d the very essence of a devoted public servant. His passion in making a positive impact on the lives of others led him to pursue a career in politics and community service, becoming a pillar of strength and an unwavering advocate for the people of Delaware. His career in the Delaware State Senate spanned from 1978 to 2018 representi­ng the Third Senatorial District.

Sen. Marshall’s political journey was marked by numerous accomplish­ments and milestones. He served with distinctio­n in various roles, including the Chairman of the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee, Chairman of the Senate Public Safety Committee, and member of the Senate and House Joint Committee on State public works projects. In these roles, Sen. Marshall demonstrat­ed exceptiona­l leadership, integrity, and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of his constituen­ts.

Beyond his political career, Sen. Marshall was a successful entreprene­ur and investor who also championed various philanthro­pic initiative­s in his efforts to make the world a better place. As a sports enthusiast, Sen. Marshall grew up playing baseball on Judy Johnson field on 2nd and Clayton Street and hoops at the Jackson Street Boys Club. When not working, he enjoyed fishing, thoroughbr­ed horse racing, and was a big Eagles and Phillies fan.

Sen. Marshall will be remembered not only for his profession­al achievemen­ts but also for his character and values. He was known for his commitment to fairness, justice, and equality. His genuine empathy, humility, and kindness touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The legacy of Sen. Bob Marshall will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of those who benefited from his tireless efforts. His impact on the community and his service to our nation will continue to inspire future leaders, activists, and service members to strive for a more just, inclusive, and secure society. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, integrity, and a commitment to public service that will serve as a guiding light for generation­s to come.

Senator Marshall is survived by his aunt, Regina Dudziec; as well as numerous cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his uncles, Stanley (Duke) Dudziec, Charles (Chip) Marshall, and Leo Marshall; and his aunt, Mary Jedrzejews­ki.

A funeral service to honor the remarkable life of Senator Robert Marshall will be held on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, at St. Hedwig Church, 408 S. Harrison St, Wilmington, DE 19805. Visitation will begin at 8:30am, with a Mass of Christina Burial to follow at 10:30am. Interment will be held in Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Little Sister of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Road, Newark, Delaware 19713, which was close to Sen. Marshall’s heart.
