WR DeVante Parker retires 2 months after signing with Eagles

Wide receiver DeVante Parker has retired after nine seasons in the NFL – and just two months after joining a new team.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Parker to a one-year deal in March, but Parker told ESPN on Monday that he has other priorities in mind right now.

“I want to see my kids, spend quality time with them,” Parker said. “I want to be there for them whenever I can.”

Parker, 31, spent the past two seasons with the New England Patriots after playing seven for the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him 14th overall in 2015. Parker had 33 catches for 394 yards without a touchdown in 13 games last season.

Across 119 career games (88 starts) for Miami and New England, Parker hauled in 402 receptions for 5,660 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Parker was expected to be an option at WR3 for the Eagles behind stars A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Philadelphia also signed Parris Campbell and added two wide receivers in the draft.

Schauffele No. 2 in world; DeChambeau vaults 89 spots

Along with winning his first major at the PGA Championship and taking home the $3.33 million prize, Xander Schauffele moved up to No. 2 in the latest Official World Golf Rankings on Monday.

Schauffele, 30, won on Sunday at Valhalla Country Club in Louisville, Ky., birdieing the final hole to defeat Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke. Schauffele, who now has the highest ranking of his career, bumped Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland to the third spot while Scottie Scheffler remained at No. 1.

The 30-year-old DeChambeau, who plays for LIV Golf, leapt 89 spots from 124th to 35th in the world.

Because golfers do not earn ranking points for LIV events, DeChambeau began the year at No. 155 and was No. 210 before he tied for sixth at the Masters.

With their strong performances at the PGA, Thomas Detry of Belgium and Justin Rose of England moved into the top 60 and earned spots in the next major, the U.S. Open, which will be held June 13-16 at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C.

Scheffler arrest drove PGA Championship ratings spike

Scottie Scheffler’s arrest drama contributed to an 18 percent viewership boost for Friday’s second round of the PGA Championship, Sports Business Journal reported Tuesday.

The second round from Valhalla in Louisville, Ky., averaged 1.61 million viewers on ESPN from noon to 8 p.m. ET, up from 1.37 million for the same slot for the 2023 tournament at Oak Hill in New York.

Scheffler, 27, was arrested in the predawn hours Friday, shortly after arriving at the golf course, and charged with felony assault of a police officer. He also was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic.

Louisville police said an officer was “dragged to the ground” by a vehicle driven by Scheffler, who was attempting to bypass a backup caused by the fatal accident earlier that morning.

Scheffler was released from custody after being booked at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, after his mug shot was taken while wearing an orange jail-issued jumpsuit. He was released in time to make his tee time, which was pushed back by 80 minutes for all players because of the traffic jam that resulted from the accident.

Scheffler finished T8 in the event after shooting a final round 65 on Sunday.

Star LB Parsons absent from Cowboys OTAs

Star linebacker Micah Parsons was not spotted as the Dallas Cowboys began organized team activities on Tuesday. Parsons, who wants a new contract, was not the only member of the Cowboys absent on Tuesday. Wide receiver Cee Dee Lamb, as expected, also was not in attendance as he seeks a new deal.

Parsons, 24, will make just under $3 million this year and $21.3 million under his fifth-year option in 2025.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time All-Pro, Parsons finished seventh in the NFL last season with 14 sacks. He had 13 as a rookie in 2021 and 13.5 in 2022.

Lamb, 25, is due to earn $17.99 million under his fifth-year option in 2024. That’s a bargain-basement price for a player coming off a record-setting AllPro season in 2023.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Lamb broke Hall of Famer Michael Irvin’s single-season franchise marks with an NFL-high 135 catches and 1,749 yards, adding a career-high 12 touchdown catches in 17 starts.

Nothing set in stone for Copa America roster, says US coach

NEW YORK – Veterans Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie headline the United States’ 27-man training camp roster ahead of Copa America but coach Gregg Berhalter said on Monday that nothing was set in stone for the tournament. The United States host Colombia on June 8 and five-times world champions Brazil on June 12 for a pair of friendlies, before Copa America kicks off on home soil on June 20.

“The messaging was very clear that although a large majority of this roster will make up Copa America, nothing’s set in stone,” said Berhalter.

A number of familiar faces from Berhalter’s 2022 World Cup team will return, including captain Pulisic, Juventus midfielder McKennie, goalkeeper Matt Turner and his Nottingham Forest tea mate Gio Reyna.
