Mrs. Ju­dith How­ell York, age 72, passed away Tues­day, De­cem­ber 4, 2018 at her home. She was born Jan­uary 6, 1946 in Raleigh, NC, a daugh­ter of Oma Austin How­ell and the late Sher­wood Hud­son How­ell and is the wife of Ron York. She loved play­ing bas­ket­ball for Apex High School. Ju­dith re­ceived her As­so­ciates De­gree from Win­gate Col­lege and her Bach­e­lors De­gree from East Carolina Univer­sity. She re­tired from the Lan­caster County School District as a teacher. Her whole life was teach­ing. She cared about each child teach­ing to their in­di­vid­ual needs. She ex­celled with “at risk” chil­dren, pro­vid­ing them with struc­ture and un­con­di­tional love. She was known as a good dis­ci­plinar­ian and her stu­dents met her high ex­pec­ta­tions of them. Ju­dith also en­joyed trav­el­ing the world with Ron hav­ing vis­ited most of the US in the early years of their mar­riage. Ju­dith grew up in Salem Bap­tist Church where she played the pi­ano/or­gan and where she and Ron were mar­ried. Ju­dith is a mem­ber of Covenant Bap­tist Church. Mrs. York is sur­vived by her hus­band of 50 years, Ron York; her mother; Oma How­ell; a son, Ryan York of Rock Hill; a daugh­ter, Suzanne Win­gard (Tripp) of Orange­burg; a spe­cial grand­daugh­ter who knew her as “Granna” and was her “BFTF” best friend in the fam­ily, Zoe Win­gard; two sis­ters, San­dra Hitch­cock (Tim) of Cary, NC and Mar­sha Massey (Tommy) of Ze­bu­lon, NC, and a brother, Hud­son How­ell ( Diana) of Holly Springs, NC. The Cel­e­bra­tion of Life Fu­neral Ser­vice for Mrs. York will be 2:00 pm Satur­day, De­cem­ber 8, 2018 at Covenant Bap­tist Church of­fi­ci­ated by Rev. Jim Os­teen. The fam­ily will re­ceive friends im­me­di­ately fol­low­ing the ser­vice. An ad­di­tional Cel­e­bra­tion of Life Ser­vice for Mrs. York will be 1:00 pm Tues­day, De­cem­ber 11, 2018 at Salem Bap­tist Church of­fi­ci­ated by Rev. Dr. Bert Welch and Dr. Jeff Beck­ett. Burial will fol­low in Salem Bap­tist Church Ceme­tery. The fam­ily will re­ceive friends im­me­di­ately fol­low­ing the ser­vice. In lieu of flow­ers, for those who wish, me­mo­rial con­tri­bu­tions may be made to the Amer­i­can Can­cer So­ci­ety, 1901 Bruns­wick Av­enue, Suite 100, Char­lotte, NC 28207. Burgess Fu­neral Home and Cre­ma­tory in Lan­caster, SC is car­ing for the fam­ily of Mrs. York.
