Phyl­lis Jack­son McLawhorn, 82, of Cape Carteret, passed away peace­fully Au­gust 29, 2018, at Har­borview Re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion Cen­ter in More­head City.

A memo­rial ser­vice will be held at the Grifton United Methodist Church on Satur­day, De­cem­ber 22, 2018 at 2 pm with visi­ta­tion im­me­di­ately af­ter in the fel­low­ship hall.

Phyl­lis was born to Roy & Chris­tine Jack­son of Grifton, NC. She and her brother Wil­liam ( Bill) Dou­glas Jack­son were twins. Af­ter grad­u­at­ing from East Carolina Univer­sity, she mar­ried Luke “Bernard” McLawhorn, Jr. in 1957. Over the years, they lived in Colorado Springs, Raleigh, Apex, Golds­boro, and then to Carteret County in 1984. Phyl­lis worked in coun­sel­ing and ad­min­is­tra­tion in the NC Pub­lic School Sys­tem where she had over 40 years of ser­vice. Phyl­lis made friends quickly wher­ever she lived, was al­ways quick to lend a hand, and loved by many. She will be missed.

She is sur­vived by her four nieces, Gayle Stroud and hus­band Neil, Donna Wain­wright, De­bra Jack­son, Ali­cia Pap­pas and hus­band Nick; and, one nephew, Doug Jack­son and wife Ellen. She is also sur­vived by three great nieces, Kris­tel Paul and hus­band, Thomas, Chris­tine Stroud, and Lexi Pap­pas; one great nephew, Alan Wain­wright; and, two great great neph­ews, Collin and Noah Paul.

Phyl­lis was pre­ceded in death by her par­ents, brother, nephew-in-law, and hus­band.

In lieu of flow­ers, the fam­ily re­quests that memo­ri­als be made in Phyl­lis’ name to the Grifton United Methodist Church at 207 McCrae Street, Grifton, NC 28530 or Crys­tal Coast Habi­tat for Hu­man­ity at PO Box 789, New­port, NC 28570.
