Ve­sey’s shootout goal lifts Rangers

COLUM­BUS, Ohio — Jimmy Ve­sey scored in the fifth round of the shootout to lift the New York Rangers over the Colum­bus Blue Jack­ets 5-4 on Satur­day night.

Ve­sey beat goalie Joonas Kor­pisalo af­ter the Blue Jack­ets’ Oliver Bjork­strand was stopped by Alexan­der Georgiev to give New York its fifth win in six games ( 5- 0- 1).

The game re­mained tied 4-4 through the third pe­riod de­spite an 11-2 shot ad­van­tage by Colum­bus, and a score­less 5-minute over­time pe­riod.

The Blue Jack­ets fin­ished with a 38-19 ad­van­tage on shots.

Kevin Shat­tenkirk and Mika Zibane­jad also scored in the shootout for New York. Artemi Pa­narin and An­thony Du­clair tal­lied for Colum­bus.

Ve­sey and Pavel Buch­nevich each had a goal and an as­sist in reg­u­la­tion, and Zibane­jad and Chris Krei­der also scored for the Rangers. Ge­or­giov stopped 34 shots.

BRU­INS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 1: David Pas­tr­nak had three goals and an as­sist to lead Bos­ton.

Pa­trice Berg­eron had a goal and two as­sists, Joakim Nord­strom also scored and Brad Marc­hand had two as­sists as the Bru­ins ended the Maple Leafs’ three-game win­ning streak and handed Toronto its first road loss of the sea­son. Jaroslav Halak stopped 40 shots.

John Tavares scored the only goal for Toronto, and Gar­ret Sparks fin­ished with 29 saves.

PAN­THERS 4, IS­LANDERS 2: Alek­sander Barkov scored the go-ahead goal in the third pe­riod for Florida.

Troy Brouwer, Mike Hoff­man and De­nis Mal­gin also scored for the Pan­thers, who won their third straight. Roberto Luongo made 29 saves for his third straight win af­ter miss­ing nearly a month with a knee in­jury.

Brock Nel­son and Mathew Barzal scored goals for New York, which has lost three in a row af­ter win­ning its pre­vi­ous five. Robin Lehner stopped 27 shots.
