Joseph R. Conciatore Sr.

Joseph Richard Conciatore, 86, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2018, surrounded by his family and blessed by the compassionate care of staff members at the Maplewood assisted living facility and Connecticut Hospice.

Joe had lost his beloved wife of 51 years, Janet, to pancreatic cancer in May 2016. For about a year after her death, he continued to live in the lovely and cozy home she’d made in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Struggling with Parkinson’s disease, however, he made a change in 2017, moving to Maplewood at Danbury, where he’d be closer to his son, Joe, Jr., and family.

Joe was born in Danbury on August 14, 1932, to Salvatore and Mary Conciatore and lived most of his life here. He served as an Army sergeant in Korea from ages 20-22 (December 1952 - September 1954), returning to continue his job at Leahy’s Fuels in Danbury. Joe worked at Leahy’s for about 35 years, ending his career as a vice president. He then worked happily at the family-owned Norbert E. Mitchell Company for 15 years. Joe was a familiar sight around Danbury during his working years, as he walked on Main Street just about every day at lunchtime, making stops at Ed’s Cigar Box, the Post Office, and other city locales, where he chatted and joked with proprietors and the many other people he knew in town.

Joe is survived by his son, Joe, Jr., Lisa, and grandson, Patrick; his daughter, Jacqueline Conciatore Senter and son-in-law Michael Senter, both of Fairfax, Virginia, his older brother, Salvatore Conciatore of Fairfield, and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Joe’s family and others who loved him dearly will miss him so much, but they’re happy that he is no longer in pain or struggling.

There will be calling hours Monday, Jan. 7 at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, 5-7 p.m., and a funeral service at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church, 12 Cottage Street, Danbury.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or to the Meals on Wheels, Estuary Council of Seniors in Old Saybrook, Conn.
