FILLING EMPTY BOWLS
The Empty Bowls Project is an international program that aims to end hunger. It was started by John Hartom, a ceramics teacher from Detroit, and his wife, Lisa Blackburn, in 1990. Hartom asked his students to make bowls for a luncheon that raised money for the needy. Empty Bowl events have since been held across the U.S. and in places like Canada, Germany and Hong Kong. New Milford’s event benefits Loaves and Fishes. More photos on
Lauren Baxter, of New Milford, right, gazes at the bowl she is glazing Saturday at the Empty Bowls Decorating Workshop at Gallery 25 at Art Depot in New Milford. The bowls will be used at the Empty Bowls Dinner on April 6 to benefit Loaves & Fishes. Also participating in the workshop were, far left, Carol Zamcheck, of
Redding, who spreads a blue glaze on her bowl and, left, Lindsey Adamou, of New Milford, who applies a yellow glaze to a bowl. The workshop instructor was Paula Sibrack Marian, right, who led students through the entire bowl-making process. Marian, a potter, “threw” all the bowls for the workshop.
