DeLuca lifts Colonials in overime

GORHAM, Maine — Alexandra DeLuca of Bethel scored the winning goal in the second overtime period to lead the Western Connecticu­t State University women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Little East Conference foe Southern Maine on Saturday.

Allison Oakley of Beekman, N.Y., had put the Colonials (4-6-0, 3-1 LEC) up 1-0 in the 71st minute, but Southern Maine tied it four minutes later. With three minutes remaining in the second overtime, Lucy Daniels of Bethel gained possession of the ball at midfield, raced down the left wing and booted a cross from the left edge of the box to DeLuca, who tucked a shot just inside the far post. WestConn goalkeeper Alexis Lainchbury of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., made four saves.

CROSS COUNTRY

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The WestConn women finished 23rd at the Mount St. Mary Invitation­al on Saturday morning. Former Pomperaug High School standout Nicole Middendorf led the Colonials, finishing 61st in 30:11. For the men, Dominick Curra of Danbury led the Colonials with a 136th-place finish in 35:46.

MEN’S SOCCER

DANBURY — WestConn scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Southern Maine 4-1 and notch its first Little East Conference win of the season. Robert Della Penna of Suffield, Darion Richeme of Danbury, Chauncey Allers of Wilton and Matthew Restrepo of Bridgeport each scored a goal for the Colonials (6-2-2, 1-1-2 LEC), while Max Cano of Stratford notched two assists and Allers added one. WestConn goalkeeper Daniel Szabo of Trumbull got his first start of the season and made four saves to seal the win.

FIELD HOCKEY

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Morgan Matthews of Bethel and Kimberly Brower of Mahopac, N.Y., each tallied two goals, while Allie Noteware of New Milford added one goal and four assists as WestConn defeated Framingham State 9-1 in a Little East Conference game. Lili Dickey of Westbrook, Amanda Spano of Mahopac, N.Y., Mia Schumey of West Hartford and Nora Swift of Brookfield each added a goal. Goalkeeper Neve Manion of Newington made seven saves for WestConn (6-4, 4-2 LEC).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

BOSTON — WestConn dropped a 3-0 decision at UMass Boston to fall to 8-8 overall (2-2 LEC). Kamari King of East Hartford led the Colonials with five kills.
