Wiser cruises to New England title

MANCHESTER, N. H — Pomperaug sophomore Kate Wiser took her dominance to the regional level Saturday as she breezed to a win in the New England championsh­ips at Derryfield Park. Wiser won with a time of 18: 04.1.

Personal bests were likely set to the backburner as muddy conditions left some finishers in a new coat of skin. Wiser won by almost 40 seconds ahead of Merrimack Valley ( N. H.) freshman Sophia Reymonds. New Milford freshman Claire Daniels also turned in an impressive performanc­e, finishing seventh in

18: 57.3.

It wasn’t just a positive afternoon for the best individual­s. Turns out three of the top six teams in New England reside in very close proximity to one another.

Fresh off battling it out for the State Open title, Immaculate this time edged the Hatters to finish as the top team in the state. The Mustangs finished third overall with 187, while Danbury took fifth in 208 and Ridgefield sixth with 273.

Mustangs senior Angela Saidman finished 16th overall in 19: 20.4 while sophomore Ailene Doherty was the school’s No. 2 runer in 20: 12.2 ( 49th overall). Taylor Mascetta finished 57th in 20: 16.9. Danbury’s Lauren Moore finished 19th overall in 19: 22.3 while Daniella Grullon Pena was 37th with a time of 19: 59.1.

The 1- 2 punch of Gabriella Viggiano ( 21st, 19: 24.0) and Tess Pisanelli ( 25th, 19: 29.4) helped the Tigers to their stellar finish. New Fairfield junior Hazel Hudson finished 38th with a time of 20: 01.1.
