When the owners of this classic center hall colonial first saw the home, they were drawn to the idea of living on a designated scenic road, in the heart of Southport Village. Nearly 30 years later, the location remains at the top of the list.

“We love the village setting, and being just a quick walk to shops, train, restaurants, and of course, the harbor and beach,” said the owners.

Perched behind a gated hedgerow, the house sits beautifully on a bit over a half-acre of manicured property and is accessed by a circular driveway. The rear yard with terrace, offers much privacy, which is not prevalent in Southport Village.

Equally as appealing are the many special original architectural features found throughout the home’s 5,285 square feet. Custom designed by prominent Southport architect, the late Roswell Barrett, the five-bedroom home is brimming with beautifully crafted detailing, incorporating antique elements such as the leaded glass sidelights surrounding the welcoming front door and the stunning floating staircase with wrought iron and brass railing that graces the entry foyer.

“Entertaining guests is something the owners do often and the house lends itself well to both large scale parties, as well as intimate dinners,” says listing agent Catherine Fingelly Granneberg. “Overnight guests can also find comfort in several rooms offering en-suite bathrooms, making it hard for them to leave.”

At the end of the foyer, columns mark the steps down into the formal dining room featuring wainscoting and French doors to the flagstone patio overlooking the lush backyard. The living room is distinguished by a handsome fireplace with paneled mantel surround and a floor to ceiling, multi-paned bow window that looks out onto a continually blooming English garden. Paneled pocket doors connect to a spacious library which is finely appointed with floor-to-ceiling, built-in bookcases and cabinetry, and French doors that access the patio.

The gourmet kitchen is a delight among an oversize island with breakfast bar and high-end stainless-steel appliances including a Thermador Professional six-burner range. The owners added a charming circular dining alcove with a bright and sunny banquette encased in windows overlooking the gardens. A back staircase leads to the upper level.

Leisure time and casual entertaining can be enjoyed in the second-floor family room among a cathedral ceiling, skylight, wet bar, a striking floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, built-in bookshelves and entertainment center. This room is also well-suited as a home theater or media room.

Five bedrooms on this level offer ample space for family members. The master suite enjoys a sitting area, walk-in closet and French doors to a private deck for a tranquil escape to savor morning coffee or retreat at day’s end. The master bath boasts a double
