Connecticu­t boys, girls dominate

This season high school track coaches and track and field athletes throughout Connecticu­t have said during many interviews that the current depth of boys and girls talent make Connecticu­t one of the strongest states in the region and nationally when it comes to the sport.

On Saturday, the state showcased that talent in dominating fashion at the New England Interschol­astic Boys and Girls Indoor Track and Field Championsh­ips in Boston.

Highlighti­ng the girls competitio­n was Alanna Smith of Danbury who won the girls 300-meter dash in a meet record 38.22 and won the 55 dash in 7.03 seconds. In the boys competitio­n Gavin Sherry of Conard continued his record-breaking season by winning the 2 Mile in 8:51.49 and broke the meet record of 8:53.25. His brother Callum Sherry of Conard was third (9:01.34) and Aidan Puffer of Manchester was fourth (9:05.35).

In other boys competitio­n, Timothy Watson of Simsb ury won the high jump (6-9), Duke Quermorllu­e of Norwalk was third (6-3) and Zyair Wali of Hillhouse was fifth (6-3).

In other girls competitio­n, Rachel St. Germain of Somers won the Girls 2 Mile in 10:36.93, Anna Keeley of Fairfield Ludlowe was second (10:49.61), Katherine Sanderson of Hall was third (11:02.14) and Kathryn Marchand of Trumbull was fourth (11:03.01).

Audrey Kirkutis of Conard won thehigh jump (5-7), Shaelyn Murphy of Maloney was second (5-6), D’Jior Delisser of Bloomfield was fifth (5-5) and Tia Stapleton of Fairfield Ludlowe was sixth (5-3).

Anna Keeley of Fairfield Ludlowe won the 1-Mile Run in 5:01.52 and Sydney Kelleher of New Milford was seventh in 5:10.49.

Mariella Schweitzer of Barlow was second in the long jump (18-2.25), third in the 55 hurdles (8.49) and fifth in the 300 (40.67).

Brittani Westberry of Windsor was second in the 600 (1:35.53), Esme Daplyn of Greenwich was fifth (1:37.16), Kate Demark of Darien was seventh (1:37.893) and Riley Powers of Newtown was eighth (1:37.895).

Connecticu­t finished in five of the top seven places in the 1000 with Kali Holden of Trumbull finishing second in 2:54.58, Olivia Birney of Simsbury was third (2:55.46), Bria Benigni of Maloney was fifth (2:56.25), Emily Mrakovcic of Wilton was sixth (2:58.06) and Tess Wasiolek of Branford was seventh (3:03.39).

Nyasia Dailey of Middletown was third in the 55 dash (7.25) and Amanda Castaldi of Sheehan was seventh (7.37).
