Helen Wahlstrom
Helen Repko Wahlstrom, long time resident of Danbury and Brookfield, CT, died peacefully in her sleep after a long illness on Thursday, April 21st, 2022, at Glen Hill Center, Danbury. She was 88 years old. Helen was born in Danbury, CT, and was the daughter of the late Andrew V Repko and Marion Siskey. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, David Wahlstrom, her brother Andrew Repko Jr, and her sister Patricia Repko. She is survived by her sisters Nancy Repko Piskura and Pauline Repko Basso.
Helen will be greatly missed by her daughter, Laurene Wahlstrom Beattie of New Milford, CT, “adopted daughter,” Elizabeth Crooks, of Birmingham, AL, grandchildren David R. Beattie and his wife Katelyn of New Milford, CT, and Samantha Beattie, her partner, Ben O’Neil, and great-grandchildren Bentley, Matilda, and Denver O’Neil of Adelaide, Australia.
Helen was a beloved teacher in the Danbury Public Schools for over 30 years and her ability to convince even the most reluctant child to embrace learning is legendary. An avid reader and word game player, Helen instilled enthusiasm for reading in her students. Even after retirement, she gave her time as a volunteer to children who needed extra attention to reach their full potential. Helen was admired for her commitment to teaching and she happily mentored those who were new to the profession. In addition, she supported working women as a leader within the Connecticut Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs.
Helen earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Danbury State Teacher’s College, now the Western Connecticut State University, where she met her future husband. Together, Helen and Dave were known for their generosity and good humor, enjoyed traveling and spending time at their homes on Candlewood Lake and in VT, and took satisfaction in being good neighbors and active community members. Helen was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church, Brookfield.
There are no calling hours. Helen will be laid to rest next to her husband on Tuesday 26th at 2:30pm in the presence of her family and close friends during a graveside service at St. Peter’s Cemetery, 71 Lake Avenue.
