Robert E. (Bob) Kinney

Mr. Robert (Bob) Eugene Kinney, age 83, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 8, 2018 in Newport News, VA.

Born February 4, 1935 in Bucyrus, OH to the late Velita Irene (Whaley) Kinney and the late Dale Bernard Kinney, Bob graduated from Mansfield High School, Mansfield, OH and magna cum laude from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. After a long career first teaching high school mathematics and working later with main frame computers and in the field of information technology (IT), he retired in 2009, after more than 15 years as the IT Director at W.H. Sadlier, Inc., New York, NY. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Dale Kinney; and brother, Richard Kinney. Surviving Bob are his loving wife of 63 years, Joyce Eileen (Miller) Kinney; sons, Steven and wife, Robin; James and wife Chong Suk; David; and John and partner, Neil Turton; daughters, Anne and Laura Springer and her husband David; sister, Linda Pitford and her husband Robert; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A man of uncommon wit and wisdom, Bob was a proud member of MENSA. He was a longtime Scoutmaster for The Boy Scouts of America, helping to guide all four of his sons to become Eagle Scouts. He served as a Sunday school teacher at Community Church of Smoke Rise, NJ. Bob also did many self-help handyman things, as evidenced by the “workshop” set up everywhere he and his family resided. With oldies streaming out of an old radio, he crafted and repaired a broad spectrum of items, always preferring to fix them rather than replace them. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family gives special thanks to the staff at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News for their thoughtful and compassionate care. Honoring his wishes, Bob’s ashes will be scattered at sea in a private ceremony.
