The Danbury Museum & Historical Society has opened a new exhibit highlighting the city’s time during the Prohibition era when alcohol was outlawed.

“Prohibition: Hatters & Hooch in ‘Dry’ Danbury” examines Connecticut’s role in temperance history, from Lyman Beecher’s “Six Sermons” on temperance in 1826 Litchfield to how Danbury’s hatting industry helped hide illegal alcohol in plain sight.

The exhibit features 18th and 19th century temperance lectures and booklets, old cocktail booklets, and gowns and suits from the museum’s extensive costume collection.

“We’re thrilled to share this unique story with our visitors this summer and autumn,” said Executive Director Brigid Guertin.

The exhibit is free and open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday each week through Nov. 10. The museum also is planning Prohibition-related programs over the next several months.
