- By Jim Shay

With August temperatures averaging several degrees above normal, we have the welcome relief of some cool weather.

According to the Northeast Regional Climate Center, Danbury’s average temperature, so far this month, has been 4.9 degrees above average. Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford has an average temperature of 79.1 degrees, 5 above normal.

It’s the same pattern at White Plains Airport, near Greenwich, and TweedNew Haven Airport where this month’s temperatures are in the 5-degrees above normal range.

“High pressure based in the Canadian Maritimes with its northeast low will continue to provide cooler and less humid conditions through tonight,” the National Weather Service said on Monday. “The air mass changes more Tuesday and Wednesday when high pressure retreats farther away with more humid conditions developing and low pressure moves from the Great Lakes into southeast Canada.”

The NWS said temperatures will remain rather cool Tuesday with highs mainly in the upper 70s.

Chances for showers increases Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

With the air getting warmer Wednesday, forecast highs reach the low to mid 80s behind a warm front, thunderstorms will be possible as well.

By this point, a cold front will be approaching from the west.

On Thursday and Friday nights, temperatures in inland areas like Danbury are expected to fall into the

mid-50s, about 12 degrees cooler than last night.

And while, it’s still early to forecast with more precision, we may get our the first dry and sunny weekend in about a month.

On Monday, the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network released rainfall totals from last week (Aug. 13-19). Monroe led the state with 7.1 inches.

Other weekly rainfall totals include 3.42 inches in Brookfield and Bethel, 2.92 inches in Newtown, and

2.61 inches in Ridgefield.
