Allers ties WestConn’s goal-scoring record

NEW HAVEN — Senior forward and former Wilton High School standout Chancey Allers scored his 44th career goal and added an assist as the Western Connecticut State University men’s soccer team defeated Albertus Magnus 5-0 Monday night in a non-conference match. Allers is tied with David Forero (200003) for WestConn’s record for career goals, and with 96 career points, Allers is only

21 points shy of WestConn’s all-time leading scorer John Benitez (1991-95).

Robert Della Penna of Suffield led the Colonials

(7-2-2) with two goals and an assist, while Matthew Restrepo of Bridgeport and Vinicius Santana of Sao Paulo, Brazil, each scored a goal. WestConn goalkeepers Luca DiCarlo of Waterbury and Daniel Szabo of Trumbull combined to make seven saves.

“It was a great team win tonight. We had a wellbalanced attack and came out aggressive to start the second half,” WestConn coach Joe Mingachos said in a press release. “I’m proud of Chauncey and the work he has put forth to achieve this milestone.”

FOOTBALL

It was a big week for the Colonials, who improved to 4-0 with their 40-27 victory over UMass Dartmouth on Saturday.

WestConn, which last opened a season with four straight wins in 2002, gained some national attention for its perfect start, collecting three votes in the American Football Coaches’ Association Division III national poll. WestConn tied with Mount St. Joseph (Ohio), Ohio Northern and Wisconsin-Stout. Mount Union (Ohio) was ranked No. 1 with 1,291 points.

WestConn cornerback Justin Witherspoon of Waterbury was named the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance Saturday. Witherspoon tied the school record with a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, and chipped in with three tackles.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

WestConn goalkeeper Alexis Lainchbury of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., was named the Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for her efforts last week. She posted a

2-0-0 record and stopped

12 of the 13 shots on goal she faced in 197 minutes of action. She made eight saves in a 2-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut and four saves in a 2-1 overtime win at Southern Maine. Her 60 saves are the thirdmost in the conference so far this season.
