Local dancers compete in internatio­nal Irish dancing competitio­n

The Ashurst Academy of Irish Dance, based in Newtown and Danbury, had two solo qualifiers and a team compete at the World Irish Dance Championsh­ips recently. The event, traditiona­lly held in Ireland but this year in North America, is often dubbed, “the Olympics of Irish Dance,” and brings dancers from countries worldwide together to compete at the highest level.

The academy, run by former stars of Riverdance, Craig and Christina Ashurst, is currently enrolling its four-week June season as well as summer camps.
