Ridgefield boys, Danbury girls teams capture crowns

- By Rich DePreta

NEW HAVEN—For the Ridgefield High School boys outdoor track team, it was long-awaited history.

For the Danbury High School girls outdoor track team, it was a

61⁄2-hour party.

But the results Tuesday were the same for the Tigers boys and Hatters girls: They both went home as FCIAC outdoor track champions.

Ridgefield amassed 94 points to hold off Greenwich (88), Staples (82) and Danbury (78).

“This is our first FCIAC outdoor track championship crown since

1977. That’s a long time,” sasid Ridgefield coach Bryan Kovalsky. “It’s a very emotional thing for the kids. We had good teams in the past. But this year we saw we had the type of team (lots of depth) that could get the job done. And it all fell into place today.”

Liam Byrne (discus) and Evan Wein (110 hurdles) had the first place finishes for Ridgefield. The Tigers were runners-up in both the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.

“It was about our depth. It was about our coaches crunching the numbers 100 ways,” said Ridgefield senior co-captain James Kane. “So many contributions. The cards fell into place.”

A top individual performer of the afternoon was McMahon senior Justin Forde.

Forde, who will be part of the University of Miami track team on full scholarship in the fall, broke his own FCIAC record in winning the long jump at 24 feet, 6.25 inches.

Forde defended his FCIAC triple jump title by leaping 50-feet, 10.25 inches. Forde also captured second place at 6-feet-8 in the high jump behind Staples’ Chet Ellis (6-10).

“I felt good. I’m fully healthy and I’ve been setting personal bests each time out in the long jump,” Forde said. “I want to end my senior year on a very high note.”

The boys crowned FCIAC individual champions Tuesday included Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, discus), Jackson Hemphill (Ludlowe, pole vault), Austin Hutchens (Warde,

1600), Chet Ellis (Staples, high jump), Ryan Raybuck (Greenwich,

100 dash, 200), Evan Wein (Ridgefield, 110 hurdles), Malcolm Going (Danbury, 400), Matthew Chalon (New Canaan, 300 hurdles), George Lepska (Staples, 800), Morgan Fierro (Staples, 3200), Zach Gladstone (Staples, shotput), Reynell Burke (Westhill, javelin).

Danbury girls amassed 180.5 points to outdistance runnerup

Greenwich 76.5.

On the girls side, a freshman shall lead them.

For Danbury, freshman Alanna Smith made her first FCIAC Championship an unforgettable event.

Smith won the 100 meter dash (12.17 seconds), the 400

(56.36) and the 200 (25.02). “It was a really special day,” Smith said. “I had personal best times in the

100 and 200. I just love this team.”

Leading the Hatters in the field events was junior Meilee Kry. She is FCIAC champion in the triple jump (36feet-7) and the long jump

(18-9.50).

“Our group has a world of potential. We had top seeds everywhere,” Kry said. “My long jump was a personal best by 8 inches. It was cool to see the success keep rolling all day long.”

Other girls crowned FCIAC individual champs Tuesday included Hailey Angelucci (Trumbull, javelin), Daphne Cutler (Darien,

1600), Tess Stapleton (Ludlowe, 100 hurdles), Caitlyn Filloramo (Ludlowe, discus), Alex Misiewicz (Trumbull, pole vault), Emily Alexandru (Trumbull, 800), Tianna Rogers (Danbury, shotput), (3200), Savannah Bromley (McMahon, high jump),
