Perfect day for Newtown’s Swierbut

- By Dan Nowak

WESTON — It was a pretty good day for Newtown standout Carly Swierbut at the South-West Conference track and field championship meet on Wednesday.

In fact, it was a perfect day.

Swierbut came away with three wins in the girls competition with victories in the 100 (12.20 seconds), the 400 (57.19) and capped the day with a win in the 200 in a meet-record 25.37.

It was a perfect day for Weston too. The Trojans won the boys team title with 142 points, Masuk was second with 98 and Pomperaug third with 97. Weston won the girls title with 152 points, Newtown was second with 119.5 and Barlow was third with 90.

“I was feeling pretty good today coming into this meet,” said Swierbut, who has committed to run track at William and Mary. “For me, it was a perfect day. The weather was great and I just felt good on the track. Preparing for this meet I was just looking to place well. This is a good meet to prepare for the tough competition you face in the state meets.

“To get all these wins, it’s so exciting. Everything really came together today for me and our whole team. We had a lot of girls qualify for the states (CIAC Class LL) and that was great too.”

The day also turned out to be perfect for freshman Shae Greene of Weston. Ranked No. 1 in New England in the javelin, she won the event in a meet record and league record

134 feet, 6 inches. Emma Crowcroft of New Milford held the previous SWC meet record (131-9) set in

2009 and she also held the league record (132-9) set in

2009.

“I’m so excited to get that distance,” Greene said. “Just before nmy last throw, one of my teammates threw water on me and said it was holy water. The water felt good and all the support I got from my team cheering for me really pumped me up.

“When I let it go, I wasn’t sure if I could get that kind of distance. But I was so happy to see that it went 134. One of the reasons for my success this season is I keep my mind upbeat. I always stay positive and that works for me.

Mariella Schweitzer of Barlow was a double winner in the girls competition with a win in the 300 hurdles (45.15) and the 100

hurdles (15.37). Sarah Nwacki of Newtown won the discus (103-7 and won the shot put (34-2.25).

In the boys competition, Conor Mahoney of Masuk and Aidan McShane of Masuk each came away with a pair of wins. Mahoney won the 100 (10.98, meet record) and the 200 (22.15, leage and meet record). McShane won the 110 hurdles (14.93) and the 300 hurdles (40.79).
