Trump ‘is really gunning for several wars’

-

Well, there it was, a Memorial Day editorial page worthy of the name. My thanks to The News-Times and all the staff and the writers who built this Memorial Day opinion page. It was a full effort to portray what war is and often has been about. This was particularly and immediately important in the face of this president’s actually gunning for war. Call his confabulations against Iran “the election war” and you will have it about right.

Unfortunately, Donald Trump is really gunning for several wars: Iran foremost, but Venezuela, China, and North Korea as well. And there’s always Afghanistan. The war against the American people ourselves, migrants as we all are. Wars against the press, those members of Congress and whoever else has an actual rational opinion and is doing something democratic about it. And, of course, the wars on science and acknowledgment of climate change. If you aren’t kissing up to the most flagrant Constitutional abuser of all time he will twit you as a deadbeat.

He has actually produced a keep-yourmind-and-your-mouth-shut politics that is corrupt on its face. We’ll never get rid of him. He will still be claiming he won, long after he’s turned out, unless we tar and feather him. Come to think of it, he seems to be doing that to himself. Have you noticed? He started last week, veering toward executive privilege — denying all government functions that demand material evidence.

How many billions of dollars of his father’s money did he lose as his own executive a few years ago? How long will it take him to lose a few hundred billion of ours? Finally, can you imagine a golden crowned bird, say like an ostrich, with its head in the sand, that smells of tar but has no feathers?
