- — jperkins@newstimes.com

Bethel’s first selectman will declare Friday as Gun Violence Awareness Day in honor of the Bethel woman killed last year and other victims.

First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker will sign a proclamation at 2:15 p.m. Friday on the steps of the Municipal Center, according to a news release. The event will remember Emily Todd, 25, a Bethel native who was shot to death in Bridgeport in December, as well as other gun-violence victims.

Bethel is among 14 cities and towns in Connecticut issuing formal proclamations for National Gun Violence Awareness Day, which is held on the first Friday in June, according to a news release.

The day coincides with the “Wear Orange” campaign, which was started by Chicago teens in honor of their friend who was shot and killed at 15, according to the campaign’s website.

A dozen events are being held across the state, including a vigil in New Milford, as part of the campaign, according to a news release.
