DEER POND FARM OPENS ITS NEW YORK SECTION
Connecticut Audubon is celebrating the opening of the New York portion of Deer Pond Farm with a series of activities on Saturday.
This parcel adds 10 miles of trails and 447 acres of public use, creating a total 835-acre preserve at 57 Wakeman Hill Road in Sherman.
Parking and access to the New York and Connecticut trails are from this address. The New York section, in Pawling, is a gentle, sloping half-mile mile walk from the parking area.
The day starts with a guided bird walk at 8 a.m. and a birdbanding demonstration at 9 a.m. A ribbon-cutting and brief ceremonywill be held at 10 a.m. and a birds of prey demonstration at 10:30. A second guided bird walk will follow at 1 p.m.
Additional education and activity stations will also be provided by Connecticut Audubon staff and volunteers. Several regional environmental organizations will also be participating.
Lunch will be available under a tent. The opening day programs and guided hikes are free but online RSVPs are requested.
