COPS INVESTIGATE AMBULANCE HIT-AND-RUN

Newtown police are looking for the driver of a vehicle involved in a Friday afternoon hit-and-run accident with an ambulance on Route 25.

The incident happened around 2:15 p.m., shortly after an ambulance heading west on Botsford Hill Road approached the intersection of South Main Street while responding to an emergency call.

After stopping to make sure it was safe to turn onto South Main Street, the ambulance — which had its overhead lights and sirens on — proceeded into the intersection and started turning left in front of a box truck stopped in the northbound lane.

As the ambulance was turning, a northbound passenger vehicle crossed into the southbound lane to pass the box truck and struck the right front corner of the ambulance, causing “minor but discernible damage,” according to police.

After pulling over and watching the vehicle continue north without stopping, the paramedic reported the incident to the Newtown Emergency Communications Center before continuing on the emergency call.

Following the call, the paramedic went to the police station around 4:20 p.m. to report the crash.

Police ask witnesses and anyone with information to call the Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841.
