Ridgefield estate of Vanderbilt heiress listed for $3.25M

- By Nicole Funaro

Known as Iradell Farm, the Georgian Colonial home on 17 Rippowam Road in Ridgefield looks like any number of Colonial homes — with its brick exterior and shutterflanked windows — that populate the area. But the 1920s home is a storied property.

The Ridgefield home once belonged to Consuelo Vanderbilt, the great greatgranddaughter of shipping tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt, according to The Washington Post. She was later married to N. Clarkson Earl Jr., an “executive with the Howard Johnson and Childs restaurant chains.” She was also the daughter of William Kassam Vanderbilt II, who The Washington Post notes was president of the New York Central Railroad.

Vanderbilt lived in the home until her death in 2011, and while Realtor.com shows that the home was last sold in 2015 for $1.25 million, it’s back on the market for $3.245 million. The listing notes that the home has been “restored, renovated and expanded” since the heiress owned the property, but inside are original details such as the paneled walls of the drawing room, which were “relocated from the Vanderbilt yacht in the 1940s and enhanced by a custom designed spiral stair by the present owners.”

Also inside the 6,823 square-foot home are four bedrooms and five full bathrooms, according to the listing, as well as chef’s kitchen and butler’s pantry, both with Calacutta counters. The estate’s living room features coffered ceilings and one of five fireplaces in the home, while a separate family room has a natural stone wall and French doors leading out to a terrace and covered porch.

There is a loft on the home’s third level that can make for a playroom or fifth bedroom, while the lower level features a gym, wine cellar and office. Outside on the home’s 4.5 acres of land, the listing mentions that a pool is being installed.
