Study to offer look at faster train ride to NYC

- By Julia Perkins

DANBURY — The public may hear updates next week on the long discussed plans to create a faster train ride from Danbury to New York City.

Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell will hold a virtual public meeting at 3 p.m. next Monday to discuss a study exploring the feasibility of restoring passenger rail service between Danbury and Southeast, N.Y.

Putnam County will provide an overview of the study, present conceptual alternatives, and discuss preliminary environmental, social, and economic considerations, according to an announcement on Danbury’s website.

Danbury leaders have said they see great potential in reopening the Maybrook rail line because it would benefit commuters and economic development. Leaders said earlier this month that some of the recently approved federal infrastructure funding could go toward the project.

The meeting may be accessed via Zoom at https://zoom.us/join or by phone at 929-205-6099 with Meeting ID: 876 0875 0898 and Passcode: 135522. The public meeting will have Spanish and Portuguese interpretation.

Putnam County welcomes community feedback on the study and will provide an opportunity to submit comments following the meeting. Questions should be directed to Vincent Tamagna, Putnam County transportation manager, at 845-8783480, extension 48109.
