NEW MILFORD — The high school will be closed Thursday after it was evacuated Wednesday afternoon due to smoke caused by roof work, according to the New Milford Public Schools.

Around 1:10 p.m., officials evacuated New Milford High School after work on the school’s roof created smoke. The fire department went to the school to assess the situation and was still on the scene as of 2 p.m., according to the school district.

There were no injuries reported, according to Superintendent Alisha DiCorpo.

The school district said all after-school activities were canceled, adult education will be held remotely and the Fall Sports Awards were postponed.

The high school will be closed Thursday. Officials will send out a message Thursday regarding if students can return Friday.

DiCorpo said it is too early to determine if the incident will cause setbacks to the school’s new roof, which cost about $4.76 million.
