WASHINGTON — A 32-year-old resident was arrested this week after fleeing the scene of a crash on westbound Interstate 84, according to police.

It all started shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday, when state troopers responded to a twovehicle collision near Exit 16 in Southbury.

According to authorities, a 2016 Hyundai Sonata driven by a 23-year-old Wolcott woman was in the left lane when an adjacent 2015 Honda Accord suddenly swerved into the left lane, sideswiping the rear passenger side of the Hyundai before continuing down the highway.

The evading vehicle was later located on northbound Route 8, where troopers said they attempted to stop the car, but the driver — later identified as Washington resident Shawn Matthew Kirk — refused to do so and continued driving, a police report stated.

Authorities were able to track down the driver at his home and took him into custody, charging him with evading the scene of an accident, disobeying the signal of an office, interfering/resisting arrest and failure to drive in the proper lane.

Kirk was released from state police custody after posting a $10,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to be arraigned at state Superior Court in Waterbury on Dec. 15.
