Kent estate on 389 acres on the market for nearly $9M

- By Meredith Guinness

The current owner of West Wind Hill estate in Kent bought the property for his wife because he’s always wanted to give her a chateau and thought the country estate on 389 acres in Kent was the closest thing, said listing agent Joseph Lorino of Brown Harris Stevens.

Built in 1991, the stoneand-shingle main home sits on the crest of a plateau with panoramic views of the property abutting Macedonia State Park. The lead architect for Straus-Edwards Associates/Architects of Woodbury would camp out on the site before the house was built to make sure it was oriented for the best views and light in different seasons, Lorino said.

“It’s one of the most special properties I have seen, and I have been in the business for 20 years,” Lorino said.

A 1.8-mile private driveway leads to the six-bedroom home, which was the model for “the castle” in the Amy Poeppel novel “Musical Chairs,” Lorino said.

The 28 rooms include a great room with a soaring peaked ceiling and 20foot stone fireplace. The sun-filled formal dining room offers three exposures and the chef’s kitchen includes a massive stone fireplace and adjoining catering kitchen. The paneled library, office and primary bedroom suite are on a private wing of the first level. The second level features a guest suite with soaking tub and deck with views. Two en-suite bedroom suites, a children’s bedroom and an office complete this floor.

The lower level features a media room, wine cellar and tasting room and adjoining prep kitchen. The home also includes a billiards room, laundry room, craft room and gym.

The current owners have done a full-house renovation and the home features reclaimed chestnut floors, banks of windows and French doors. Stone steps lead to the pool, tennis court and two-story pool house with full kitchen.

“It even has a dungeon, where the generator is in the iron-gated alcove carved into the rock in back,” Lorino said. “Always gives the kids a thrill.”

This house is on the market for $8,995,000.
