Tooning out of 2021

- — John Breunig

Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but there seems to be no end to the rhetoric inspired by political cartoons. Some observations may draw silent nods of agreement from readers, but every day we reliably hear blow-back from those on the other side of the pen-and-ink aisle.

For all the essays, TV specials and social media postings, nothing can shorthand 12 months as efficiently as a review of the work of cartoonists.

No one gazing into this time capsule decades from now would be surprised by repeated COVID-19 observations, but they may have forgotten 2021 was also the year of the U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders memes, spring break students storming beaches during the pandemic, a rise in recreational marijuana legalization, Facebook crashing and housing prices skyrocketing.

Here’s a sample of memorable political cartoons from the past year. For more, check out https://bit.ly/3FM0PVS. Send responses to opinion@hearstmediact.com (drawings welcome).
