School board member resigns

DANBURY — Democrat Joseph Britton has resigned from his school board seat to focus on City Council.

Britton, who was elected to a first term on the council in November, said previously that he planned to leave the school board. He submitted his letter of resignation to the secretary of the education board on Monday.

“Serving on the Danbury Board of Education has been the honor of my life,” Britton wrote. “However, the duties I now possess as a Councilman for the City of Danbury will not allow me to dedicate the appropriate time and attention Membership of the Board of Education requires.”

He resigned effective Jan. 15, so his last meeting will be Jan. 12.

Britton represents the Fourth Ward with Democrat Farley Santos, who also resigned from the school board when he was appointed to fill a vacancy on City Council in March 2019.

The board will need to interview candidates and appoint Britton’s replacement. His term was up in November 2023.

“It is my hope whoever replaces me finds the same honor and sense of duty to do right by our children as I did during my time on the Board,” Britton wrote.

Republicans earned a 6-5 majority on the school board in the November election. New members include Britton’s mother, Democrat Luisa ZagottisBritton.
