Snowstorm headed for Danbury region
4-6 inches expected to start falling across area overnight
It is expected that 4 to 6 inches of snow will begin falling overnight in the Danbury area, likely complicating morning commutes and potentially canceling school.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory and expects the snow to begin around midnight and last until about noon on Friday. The time frame of the storm meant local public works crews were prepping for the storm Thursday and pre-treating roads, while school administrators discussed the possibility of cancellations.
It is expected the snowfall rates could exceed 1 inch per hour for a brief period, leading to snowcovered roads and hazardous travel during the Friday morning commute.
“This is a medium severity storm,” said Tim Nolan, public services superintendent. “It’s going to be light and fluffy snow, 5 inches deep by all forecasts ... It’s a pretty typical snowstorm for January.”
Danbury schools were already slated to be closed Friday due to staffing shortages tied to COVID-19. Brookfield, New Fairfield and Newtown schools plan to close Friday due to the storm. Other districts said Thursday it was possible school would be called off for Friday due to snow.
The COVID-19 testing site at Western Connecticut State University will be closed Friday.
