Snow disrupts Danbury area
Schools close, morning driving difficult
Overnight snow that didn’t let up until late Friday morning closed schools and made for difficult driving conditions. But by the afternoon, the light and fluffy snow had been cleared from roadways, and residents throughout the area were busy cleaning up.
About 7 to 8 inches of snow was dumped on the Danbury area between midnight and late morning, according to the National Weather Service’s unofficial tally. Towns in northern Fairfield and Litchfield counties largely received slightly less accumulation.
“The snowing seems to have stopped,” Sherman First Selectman Don Lowe said around 9:20 a.m. “Looks to me like we received about 4 to 5 inches of white fluffy snow.”
Limited wind and the light snow prevented power outages in the area.
The National Weather Service estimated 7.6 inches of snow fell in Danbury, 8.1 inches in Newtown, 7.5 inches in Southbury and 4.5 in New Fairfield. Other totals in the area were unavailable Friday evening.
Most school districts throughout the Danbury area announced school cancellations for Friday the night prior because of the timing of the storm, with a few alerting families Friday morning. Danbury schools were previously canceled for Friday due to COVIDrelated staffing shortages.
Some COVID testing sites in the area were also closed Friday.
Roxbury First Selectman Patrick Roy said he went out with the crews clearing roads beginning at 4 a.m.
“The roads look great. I’m happy to report no accidents,” he said at 10:30 a.m.
Roxbury and some other towns in the area closed their municipal buildings for the day.
Danbury, which declared a “Level 1 snow emergency,” putting a parking ban into effect, lifted the ban by Friday afternoon.
More winter weather is expected. The National Weather Service is forecasting freezing rain Sunday before 10 a.m. with a chance or rain or freezing rain between 10 a.m. and 1 a.m. Rain and snow are expected to follow after 1 p.m. and heading into the evening hours. Wind is expected in the 8 to 10 mph range, with gusts as high has 21 mph.
