Edward F. Ackell

Edward F. Ackell, 90, of Danbury, husband of Beverly (Moses) Ackell, died on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at his home.

Mr. Ackell was born in Danbury, January 23, 1931, a son of the late Ferris and Barbara (Elias) Ackell. He attended Danbury schools, graduated from Danbury High School with the Class of 1948 and Western Connecticut State University.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal.

Mr. Ackell began his career of retail merchandising with J.C. Penny Company and later with Bradlees, a Stop & Shop Company where he was a district manager. Mr. Ackell became known as “The Mayor of Main Street,” as he owned and operated Ed’s Cigar Box for twenty years in Danbury.

Mr. Ackell, a lifelong Danbury resident was a member of the Korean War Veterans and the Lebanon-American Club where he served as a past president.

Active in his community of faith, St. Anthony Maronite Catholic Church of Danbury, Mr. Ackell was a member of the former Mens Club where he served as a past president and secretary, and was a member of the Order of St. Sharbel of the Eparchy of St. Maron, for twenty years. He was also a member of the National Apostolates of Maronites and attended many of its national conventions.

In addition to his wife Beverly of 62 years, Mr. Ackell is survived by his godchildren, Francis Zaccagnini, Michael Zaccagnini, Michaela Benton-Petrini, and Benjamin Ackell. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ackell was predeceased by his sister, Najla O’Dell, and by two brothers, Dr. Edmund F. Ackell and Albert F. Ackell.

Mr. Ackell along with his wife Beverly were most grateful for the kindness and care extended to them during this journey, most especially his sister-in-law Phyllis Moses, his nephew Ken Ackell and his wife Susan. Special thanks also to the entire staff of Hancock Hall and Regional Hospice.

Due to concerns about social gatherings affecting us all at this time, all funeral services will be private.
