Wake Forest leading at New Haven Regional

No. 3 seed Wake Forest will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the NCAA Division I men’s golf New Haven Regional at Yale Golf Course.

Wake Forest, the ACC tournament champion has a two-round total of 21-underpar 539. North Carolina, the No. 1 seed, shot 13-underpar in Tuesday’s second round and stands in second place at 540. North Florida and Georgia Southern are tied for third at 548.

Texas Tech is fifth (550), followed by Illinois (555) and Virginia (556). The top five teams advance to the national championsh­ip, which will be held at Grayhawk

GC in Scottsdale, Arizona, May 27-June 4.

A pair of North Carolina Tar Heels top the individual leaderboar­d. Ryan Gerard shot his second consecutiv­e 5-under-par 65 to stand at 10-under 130, one shot better than Austin Greaser, who fired a 7-under 63.

Alex Fitzpatric­k (Wake Forest) and Mason Williams (Georgia Southern) are tied for third (133). Ex- Xavier High School standout Chris Fosdick, now at Virginia, is tied for 24th (1-under 139).

UConn’s Caleb Manuel is in a five-way tie for sixth place at 4-under 136, including Adam Vagberg from Virginia Commonweal­th. Manuel and Vagberg are competing for the low individual honors and a spot in the national championsh­ip meet.

Yale moved up a spot to 12th place out of 14 teams, surpassing North Carolina State. The Bulldogs have a 22-over 582 total, led by Darren Lin at even-par 140.

Sacred Heart stands in 14th at 309, led by Eoin Freeman (9-over 149).

PALADINO WINS PALMER CUP

Cody Paladino shot a pair of 5-under 67s for the last two rounds to win the 19th Palmer Cup by eight strokes on Tuesday at Wampanoag Country Club.

Paladino, the reigning New England Amateur champion and a member at Hartford GC, trailed by three shots after Monday’s opening round. He took a one-shot lead into the final round, then pulled away in the final round and finished at 10-under-par 206.

This is Paladino’s second Palmer Cup title, also winning it in 2013.

Chris Ayers (Goodwin GC) placed second at 2under 214. James Sheltman of Wallingfor­d CC (and formerly of Alling Memorial GC in New Haven) took third (215).
