Ralph Harold Gay

Ralph Harold Gay, longtime resident of Ridgefield, died peacefully at Wilton Meadows on Saturday, August 27. He was 93 years old. Ralph was born August 19, 1929, to Lewis Ulysses Gay and Ethel Eggleston Gay in the family’s Ridgefield farmhouse. He lived in South Salem, NY for all of his childhood. Ralph was married to Joan Olmstead of Wilton on October 8, 1955.

Ralph worked as a rural route mail carrier for 35 years, starting in Katonah, NY and transferri­ng to Ridgefield in the late 1950’s before retiring in 1985. He delivered mail in the Branchvill­e area for most of his career.

Ralph was noted for his kindness, generosity and sense of humor. He was a member of the Independen­t Order of Odd Fellows charitable organizati­on for more than 50 years. He was also a longtime member of the local merchants’ bowling league, and enjoyed playing pinochle and card games with family and friends.

After retirement, Ralph most enjoyed traveling with his wife and working in his garden. He never missed a meal and enjoyed good home cooking. A true family man, Ralph loved attending his grandchild­ren’s events. He will be remembered for his plethora of anecdotes and life lessons.

Ralph is survived by Joan, his wife of nearly 67 years; his children Jerry Gay (Patricia) and Diane Strickrodt; grandchild­ren Kevin Gay (Hilary) and their son Graham, Lynn Strickrodt and her sons Charles, Nathaniel and Thomas, Brian Strickrodt (Cathy), and Katherine Gay (William Smith).

Ralph was predecease­d by his siblings Robert, Francis, Evelyn, Frederick and Donald.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, September 1, at 11 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery, 165 Ridgefield Road, Wilton.
