Danbury bar’s liquor license suspended, officials say

- By Lisa Backus

DANBURY — The liquor license for La Canchita Bar & Lounge on Delay Street will be suspended Nov. 28 to 30 and the establishment was issued a $1,000 fine after police found patrons drinking after hours earlier this year, according to the state Department of Consumer Protection.

Officers were called to the bar around 2:10 a.m. on Feb. 20 for a disturbance created by a woman whose car had been towed, police reports indicated.

The responding officers found about 200 people still inside La Canchita drinking and refusing to leave, police reports showed. Security officers at the bar asked police to help them disperse the crowd, officers said in the report. The officers had to call for more help to control the large crowd, the reports stated.

The DCP’s Liquor Control Division received a referral from Danbury police after the incident, documents said.

Danbury police also submitted body camera footage showing the drinking was taking place after 2 a.m., DCP officials said in a report detailing the violation. The bar’s permittee Genia Alvarez was told about the complaint, but claimed she didn’t recall what happened that day.

Alvarez and the DCP came to an agreement to settle the complaint with a three-day suspension and a $1,000 fine after a hearing in August, documents stated.
