- By Sean Barker

The CIAC softball championships have a new home.

After decades being held primarily at West Haven’s Biondi Field and Stratford’s DeLuca Field, the CIAC announced an agreement with the University of Connecticut to host championship games beginning with this upcoming season.

Each of the four CIAC championships in Class LL, L, M and S will be held at UConn’s Burrill Family Field Softball Complex, which opened in 2021.

The state-of-the-art facility, which ranks among the finest in the northeast, includes a fully electronic video/scoreboard in rightcenter field. The complex has an AstroTurf OPS synthetic turf outfield with Hilltopper infield, holds a capacity of 518, including 250 chair back seats and has dimensions of 200 feet down each line and 220 to straight-away center field.

The complex, located on Jim Calhoun Way, also features three outdoor cages, three mounds in both home and visiting bullpen and lights. The sunken dugouts include storage space and a player restrooms. Restrooms and storage space will be provided at the main entry of the stadium.

“The CIAC is thrilled to offer student-athletes the opportunity to play at UCONN,” CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said in a release. “UCONN’s staff has been great to work with and share CIAC’s excitement in bringing CIAC State Championships to Connecticut’s premier softball facility. The experiences student-athletes will have at UCONN are sure to create lifetime memories and inspire every team on their road to Storrs.”

The 2023 CIAC softball state championship games in all classes (S, M, L and LL) are scheduled for June 10.
