The best and the rest around Connecticut

-

I created my own thumbs up/thumbs down list to share with your readers,

Thumbs up to Hearst Connecticut Media for continuing its investigation of the fake ticket scheme in the State Police. This needs to be fully investigated and all involved punished for their illegal actions.

Thumbs up to the judge who declined to accept the accelerated probation plea deal for the three men involved in the Fairfield illegal dumping action. These men exposed the citizens and employees of Fairfield to potential illness and the town to significant cost to remediate this crime. They need to pay for this to the full extent and not some slap on the wrist.

Thumbs up to Jim Mora for resuscitating a dying UConn football program, and also for his interest in assisting the Connecticut high school teams. Coach Mora recognizes that these schools can provide good feeder programs to his team and also create new fans for his team. Well done.

Thumbs down to the state Republican party leaders. If we want to win in Connecticut, we need to ignore the far right as we can only win by sticking with traditional Republican values. Lower crime, lower taxes, and support of businesses is where we should be putting our efforts, not the anti-vaxers, anti-gay marriage, and anti abortionists. Those issues are not going to win elections in this state and quite frankly most of us Republicans don’t care about those issues..

Thumbs down to the paper’s sports reporting — as one letter writer wrote, we don’t hear about the outcome of sporting events for at least two days. That’s not reporting, that’s an untimely historical report.

Thumbs down to the enforcement on the Merritt Parkway. There are commercial vehicles using the Merritt as an alternative to I-95 — I’ve seen tractor trailers, 24-foot box trucks, one pickup truck pulling two vehicles with out-of-state license plates and a large motor home which had to pull over as it couldn’t navigate the low bridge, all in the past few weeks. The only time I see a state trooper is either at an accident or at the construction sites, otherwise it’s a free for all up there.
