CIAC semifinals by the numbers

Twenty-four teams will hit the gridiron on Sunday in the CIAC football semifinals, vying for a spot in the state championsh­ip games on Saturday, Dec. 10. Here are some interestin­g numbers surroundin­g the semifinals.

2 Times Woodland has beaten Ansonia in the program's history.

2 Defending champions still left in the playoffs — Killingly and Maloney. 2 Teams left that have never reached a state championsh­ip game — Law and

Gilbert/Northweste­rn/ Housatonic.

2 Teams that won on lastsecond missed field goals by their opponents — Fairfield Prep and Shelton. 3 No. 1 seeds lost in the quarterfin­als — Southingto­n, St. Joseph, SMSA. 3 No. 1 seeds still alive —

Ansonia, Cromwell/Portland and Berlin.

3 No. 8 seeds who won. It was the first time a No. 8 seed has won since 2018 — New Canaan 42, Shelton 34. And it was the first time multiple top seeds lost since 2013, when two No. 1 seeds lost.

4 Seasons in a row that Bloomfield and Maloney have advanced to semifinal game.

4 Teams remaining who played in a state championsh­ip last year — Fairfield Prep, Killingly, Maloney and Rockville. 4 Days off between games for all teams, including Wilton, which had 19 days off between its last game and the quarterfin­als.
