Nate Carter, UConn’s No. 1 running back at the start of the season, has declared that he will enter the NCAA transfer portal.

“Thank you to Coach Mora, the Coaching Staff, athletic trainers, equipment staff, and everyone involved within the UConn Football team that have supported, sacrificed, and served me here at UConn,” Carter said on Twitter.

“With much prayer and consideration, I’ll be entering the transfer portal with three years of eligibility remaining. God bless!”

Carter was the Huskies’ top offensive weapon heading into this season. But during UConn’s fourth game of the year against Michigan, Carter suffered a second-degree shoulder separation which resulted in him missing the remainder of the season.

Prior to the injury, Carter ranked third in the country in rushing yards with 384 and ranked second among all running backs with at least 50 carries in yards per carry (6.5).

He saw the field in Week 8 against Ball State but did not touch the ball, Carter did not play for the rest of the season.

His announcement comes a day after UConn accepted an invitation to face Marshall in the Dec. 19 Myrtle Beach Bowl.

UConn running backs coach E.J. Barthel recently announced he will be joining Matt Rhule’s staff in Nebraska.
