Vatican Swiss Guard slayings back in spotlight with new book

One of the most sensational crimes in recent Vatican history is back in the spotlight thanks to a book about the 1998 slayings of the Swiss Guard commander and his wife by a lower-ranking guard who then killed himself. The book is by Laura Sgro, a veteran defense attorney in Vatican criminal trials. She is representing the mother of the accused guard, Cedric Tornay. Sgro has filed a complaint with the U.N.’s Human Rights Council alleging the Vatican violated her rights in the way it handled requests for information and limited access to its file on the May 4, 1998 slaying. She presented the book, titled “Blood in the Vatican,” Tuesday in Rome.
