Stocks rise on Wall Street, but remain lower for the week

Stocks rose on Wall Street, but remain lower for the week after five straight losses. The S&P 500 was up 0.7% in afternoon trading on Thursday and the tech-heavy Nasdaq was up 1.1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.6%. U.S. crude oil prices were mostly unchanged after bouncing around earlier in the day. They hit their lowest point of the year a day earlier. Bond yields rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which helps set mortgage rates, rose to 3.49%. A government report showed that slightly more Americans filed for jobless claims last week.
